Complications of Orthognathic Surgery
~ Troubles I’ve Met ~
Michael Yuanchien CHEN, DDS. MS.
There’re a variety of complications regarding orthognathic surgery, either commonly & well documented or extremely rare & unexpected ones. In this presentation, I’m going to share with you the following troubles I’ve met in the past 3 decades including:
1、 Problems associated with poor coordination with orthodontic partners.
2、 Problems associated with maxillary procedures, such as septal deviation, nose stuffiness…etc.
3、 Problems associated with mandibular procedures, such as bad splits, condylar dislocation, mental nerve avulsion and rupture of facial vessels…etc.
4、 Non-met high expectations from patients or peers.
A word of advice to all interested in Elective Orthognathic Surgery ~ It’s not possible to learn all complications from published articles nor the unforgettably painful experiences of our own. Please never be proud of being able to handle complications thereby promoting surgical skills and career reputation.
