The sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSO) described by Trauner and Obwegeser in 1957 was the first intraoral ramus osteotomy that permitted mandibular setback. And the first intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO), performed with a dental drill was described by Winstanley in 1968.
These two representative surgical methods have been used in orthognathic surgery. The SSO is most commonly used because of its versatility.
But IVRO is still used by many surgeons for a lower incidence of permanent neurosensory disturbance and is less harmful to the temporomandibular joint compared to SSO.
In this lecture, I would like to introduce the experiences and clinical results of intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital since 2003.
